St. Killian's Heritage Trust was established in 1993, and have among some of its fine achievements, developed a nationally acclaimed heritage centre in the village of Mullagh in Co. Cavan. In 2004 the group set up a subcomittee to manage the redevelopment of Mullagh Parochial Hall for the benefit of the local community, to be run in a manner which would be self-sustaining in the absence of grant aid in the years to come.
Since then the subcommittee on the MPH 2000 project have established links with numerous potential sources of funding, and have been allocated funds in respect of specific sub-projects. They have commissioned architect's drawings of the Hall, with plans for its redevelopment. They have also embarked on field trips to learn from other such similar type projects.
The purpose behind the development is to meet the needs of this rapidly expanding community by developing Mullagh Parish Hall in such a way as to provide for the delivery of services from that base. In doing so they aim to integrate new arrivals, maintain the involvement of senior citizens, and consolidate the community as a chesive social unit, increasing the quality of life for all of the inhabitants.
The group has comissioned a feasibility study, currently under progress, to give them the accurate data required for forward planning. As a result of this research they have demonstrated the demand for services. This demand is as a result of an explosion in population, with planning permissin for further 400 houses already granted. Other contributary factors include; intense pressure on accommodation in the local primary school; steadily increasing popularity of senior citizens' and mother-and-toddlers' group; the number of special needs children in the area (and the enthusiatic reaction of their parents on learning of the project and its' objectives).
