Merville House is a social economy enterprise that facilitates community and corporate usage, utilizing an elegant late 18th century manor house, in Newtownabbey, North of Belfast.
Merville House is set within the residential area of Merville Garden Village, a post world war two housing development with approximately 450 dwellings, built in the style of the city garden movement.
The area has remained neutral being mixed in religion over the period of the troubles and supports a strong, integrated and active community focus for all its users.
Following a £1 million restoration project, completed in May 2006, the House reopened to once more become the focal point for the community. Painstaking restoration ensured that parts of the house retained their original features, reflecting its status as one of Northern Ireland’s original gentleman’s seats.
The original house was extended and now includes a purpose built office suite, which houses 3 offices for corporate hire, and the largest of the event rooms, The Coey Room.
To reflect the history of Merville House, each room is named after one of the prominent families who lived in Merville and had a connection to the House.
The Coey Room – Named after Sir Edward Coey, the only liberal mayor of Belfast
The Rowan Room – named after solider turned magistrate, Major John Rowan
The Robinson Room, named after businessman and industrialist, Frederick Charles Gunning Robinson
The Donegal Room - named after the 5th Earl of Donegal, Arthur Chichester
The House has the capacity to hold events for up to 100 persons, and the rooms are all of varied size for multiple usage.
Currently the house is home to a number of resident clubs, including a youth club, Bridge Club, Yoga Club and Ju-Jitsu Club. The house is also used frequently for corporate events and we are delighted to announce that we are also licensed for civil wedding ceremonies.
40% of the space within the house is for commercial use, to allow the house to become self sustaining, with the remaining 60% used by the community. To encourage participation of the community of Merville and within the Borough of Newtownabbey, the house also plays host to a number of annual events, such as a Christmas Craft Fair, and Ulster Scots Evening and Christmas Carol Service.
